Welcome to the end of the Wild West. Welcome to the quiet life of a broken-down bounty hunter whose own story, one of bloodshed, pain, and guilt, ended long ago—or so he thought. In a small town called Ashecott, something evil has arrived. Something more dangerous than a gunslinger, more sinister than an outlaw, and older than the town it seeks to infect. Something from a world beyond the only one its victims have ever known. Something darker. Unfortunately for that evil, Jonah Hex has taken notice. Not just of the otherworldly entities surrounding his home or the child with mysterious abilities they seek to capture—but also of the chance to more

Oct 07, 2026This was an excellent way to start Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death #1! The creative team captured my attention immediately and didn’t let it go until the very end. This needs to be on everyone’s pull lists! Read Full Review

Oct 12, 2026Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death #1 is an atmospheric take on everyone's favorite scarred gunslinger that mixes elements of the supernatural with its tale of a deathless man who wants to stop killing, even if it's the only thing he's good at. It effectively paints a portrait of a tired old man who wants nothing more than to live out his days in peace. The story's slow pace helps to build an atmosphere of dread, while the art and colors work together to make this issue stand out as a unique offering. Jonah Hex may be deathless, but as the supernatural forces at work in the town of Ashecott show, things could always be worse. Read Full Review

Oct 07, 2026The sins of the past pail in comparison to the evil that Jonah Hex finds in an impressive first issue! Oct 07, 2026Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death #1 is a new take on the deathless cowboy, one that doesn’t shy away from the grime or the grit of its genre and lead character. Handing Walsh the reins of this proverbial horse could prove to be one of DC’s best decisions in 2026. Read Full Review

Oct 08, 2026Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death #1 is off to a promising start when an aged Jonah Hex wants to be left alone, only to find the darkness won’t listen. Michael Walsh’s turn as writer and artist goes a long way toward capturing the atmosphere and tone of the supernatural Old West. That said, the issue is more setup than hook, so you’ll have to wait until issue #2 to get pulled in. Read Full Review

I was brought up on Western films and have an undying love affair with horror , so Jonah Hex ticks all the boxes for me. Outstanding art paired with an attention to detail that really hits all the proverbial home runs. DC may be killing it with their Absolute line but this is a hidden gem that is well worth the enjoyment........

Sheeez, that is a very decent way to introduce a lot of new reader to Jonah Hex... damn!
This Michael fella is a true rising star and probably one of the hardest working artist/writer in the industry.
If this bad boy is not on your reader list,... might be a mistake. -

I really liked this first issue and I also really like western anything and Jonah Hex. Cool character and an interesting story. The best title I read all week in a pretty decent week of books.

Really solid start to this one. Enjoyed the tone set for this book, particularly the darkness and horror of it. The page with the empty set of skin was, especially, great. I wish the ending here was a little stronger, but I'm still looking forward to seeing where this goes. There isn't much known yet, based off of this issue alone, but there was enough to hook me and get me invested in the rest of the series.

Writer/artist Michael Walsh delivers a moody western horror tale. Although his art is a bit on the rough side, it’s good enough to convey the story. My only issue is the garish coloring that doesn’t quite fit the western atmosphere. It’s probably meant to be ugly, but I really don’t like to look at this color palette the whole book through. Anyway, I like the story.
