The Deadman #1 puts an interesting spin on an often overlooked character. More than any of the DC Next Level titles to date, it truly lives up to the ideal of giving new creative teams a chance to do something unique to redefine the DC Universe. That should give it broad appeal beyond the audiences of supernatural and horror comic fans who will definitely enjoy this series. Read Full Review

    AIPT - Christopher Franey

    Jun 03, 2026

The Deadman #1 delivers a fresh and imaginative reinvention of Boston Brand by turning him into a supernatural “custodian” of souls. W. Maxwell Prince injects the series with humor and charm while Martin Morazzo and Chris O’Halloran create eerie, stylish visuals that make the afterlife feel both bizarre and dangerous. The result is a fun, creepy, and highly promising start. Read Full Review

The (after)life and times of Boston Brand get pushed to a new level of horror in this magnificent opening chapter. Prince blends humor with terror to examine the complex world of Brand. Morazzo & O'Halloran deliver a wide range of imagery fitting for such a unique tale. The challenges of life after death have never been more engaging. Read Full Review

Overall, Deadman’s first issue is a whole lot of dark, honest fun. It balances grim reality with hopeful, beautiful reality, and has gotten me plenty excited for whatever’s coming next. It’s rare to see a DC book balance its tone so well, especially without making any of the jumps feel overbearing. This miniseries has a very promising start, and if the rest of it is at the same quality, it’s bound to be something special. If you’re a fan of ghost stories, Deadman, or this team’s previous work, you’re sure to like this too! Read Full Review

This is DC taking a cult character and refusing to sand down the weird edges. Bless that. We do not need every supernatural book to feel like Batman in a candlelit room. We need strange. We need poetic. We need horror that can crack a joke and then punch your soul in the throat. Prince, Morazzo, O’Halloran, and Good Old Neon bring that here with confidence and style. I find personified aspects of death and their assistants comforting, but something that could scare Death itself? That’s horror I can get behind, especially when there’s a dash of 4th wall breaking to relieve the tension. Read Full Review

I felt the issue got a bit bogged down by excessive dialogue, it didn't need that much. Having a lot of dialogue is fine, but here it just didn't help move the story forward. That being said, I can't deny it kept me hooked the whole way through. I really liked the characterization of Deadman, and this supernatural horror vibe is right up my alley. I'll definitely check out the next issues.

It's hard for me to explain why...but, I really enjoyed this. Yes, definitely wordy. However, still really enjoyable. I think Prince did a nice job of capturing Boston's personality and I'm looking forward to more of that. Additionally, I really enjoyed the spirit-inhabited town, as I felt that it was a super interesting concept with potential for further exploration in the future. The antagonist we get here is intriguing, as well. I think I need to see a little more of him before fully forming a solid opinion on him, but I liked what we got here. Overall, I really enjoyed what we got. Room for improvement, for sure, but I still liked this a lot nonetheless. So glad we have a good Deadman book right now, especially considering that it's bee more

I was not familiar with The deadman niche. Martin Morazzo has a very specific style, high level simplicity and kinda out of line/control. Matches perfectly with this story imo.

I can't say I'm hooked, bit this def belongs to the good stuff. The cover and future covers are unreal and most likely going to be sought after.

Wordy beyond wordy; doesn't get the character of Deadman a little bit (this should be a Vertigo/Black Label book, not a regular in-continuity book) and basically boils down to Ice Cream Man lite in a thin Deadman skin -if you don't mind that, have at it. Personally, I wanted more of a Deadman book. Martin Morazzo's art gets worse for me the more I see it - it is unique among other art (except for Frank Quietly and Chris Burnham) but is too similar to itself in different books. I am sure this will be a critical darling (since everything is nowadays!), but I can't see it being a big seller.
