This issue sets Wonder Man on a great path. The line work feels like a love letter to Kirby, while the colors feel modern and crisp. This is a love letter to the Silver Age of comics set in the gritty modern world. Simon’s powers seem effortless in the hands of this art team, making the impossible feel like another day at the office. Read Full Review

Wonder Man #1 isn’t changing the comic industry, and any MCU fan picking up the book isn’t going to get exactly what the show gave them. However, they are going to get a first issue that will keep them coming back. The characters are fun, the plot is exciting, and the art makes the story work better. MCU synergy has become a huge problem over the years for a lot of comic fans (including this one; couldn’t you tell?), but this is an example of it working beautifully. Marvel — more of this please. Wonder Man #1 provides a sophisticated look at Simon Williams’ career health while requiring a significant amount of prior knowledge to truly appreciate. The art team delivers a visually stunning experience that captures the smog-filled decay of Hollywood’s future with excellently applied tonality. Ultimately, the book earns a spot for those invested in deep character studies rather than traditional superhero action. Read Full Review

Wonder Man #1 is a curious issue. There are serious elements at play, but they are tucked inside a lot of very offbeat moments. The issue ends with a lot of promise, but Duggan will have to blend the issue’s various facets better. Read Full Review

    Astonishingly Awful

The story is really fun in an old school way. I’m also happy to see Hellcat and Killerwatt, who was the standout star in the last West Coast Avengers series. However, what the inker did to Buckingham’s pencils is unforgivable.

Unfortunately, not up to the level of quality I was hoping for. I know the existence of this book in the first place is, most likely, largely thanks to the new Disney+ show. That said, I was really excited for Simon to get a new series, since he doesn't typically get a lot of love. Unfortunately, what we got here just wasn't incredibly interesting. I liked Buckingham's art a pretty good amount, but Duggan's story just felt a bit jumbled and all over the place. There was a direction for the rest of the book, but it wasn't always the most clear thing in the book. I don't know if I'm doing the best job of explaining it, but, my point is that this didn't do a whole lot to keep me invested. I'll still read the rest of this because I like the cre more
