The Aspiring Kryptonian - Tyrone Tony Reed Jr

    Jun 05, 2026

Supergirl: Survive #1 is the right book at the right time, especially with the new Supergirl movie releasing later this month. This issue can work hand in hand with the film by welcoming new readers and fans into the world of Kara Zor-El and her baby cousin. More importantly, it reminds readers that Kara is not just Superman’s cousin. She is a survivor, a protector and a hero with a powerful story of her own. Read Full Review

Supergirl Survives #1 gives us just enough backstory into who this version of Kara is and the amount of development I am sure we will see by the time she reaches Earth if she does at all. I love the coloring and the art as it brings a warmth to the pages along with the lettering. This is going to be a fun ride and I am here for it! Read Full Review

This is obviously a big summer for Supergirl, with a graphic novel, an acclaimed ongoing series, a hardcover anthology, and this series. And based on this first issue, it’s an excellent start to another great evergreen Supergirl tale. Read Full Review

Rating Supergirl: Survive #1 kicks off the Summer of Supergirl with an emotional bang. Kara Zor-El’s journey to protect her cousin in an unforgiving universe has the potential to be one of the best stories in the House of El’s history. A killer narrative combined with Reis’ ethereal art style makes for a great debut issue. This was a great new take on Krypton’s destruction and the journey of Kara and Kal is something I will be looking forward to each month as this run progresses. Read Full Review

Supergirl: Survive #1 is an emotional, character-driven, fresh take on a familiar story with fantastic artwork. Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan make Kara instantly relatable while Rod Reis elevates the story with outstanding visuals, both capturing the tragedy of Krypton’s final days and the hope for a better tomorrow. Supergirl: Survive is a stunning and heartfelt retelling of Kara Zor-El’s journey that pairs great storytelling and beautiful artwork to create a story with exploring. Read Full Review

Considering how carefully they’ve paced the first issue, I’m interested to see where the series will ultimately take Kara and Kal, especially as it has deviated so far already from the story that we’re familiar with. If the quality of this issue is anything to go by, there’s a lot to look forward to! Read Full Review

Kara Zor-El’s future is thrown off-course with one simple mission statement to live by. Parker & Sheridan push Kara to her breaking points with the writing. Reis locks in on the ever-changing reactions to a collapsing world. A bold & unique twist onto the vision of the Maiden Of Might. Read Full Review

Super Hero Hype - Matt Morrison

    Jun 03, 2026

Supergirl: Survive #1 will be the perfect introduction to Kara Zor-El for young readers who want more after seeing the Supergirl movie. Conversely, it’s an interesting take on the classic origin for longtime Superman fans. Its only real flaw is taking the whole of this first issue to set up what DC Comics says will be a survival story. Time will tell how it reads as a whole novel, but this first chapter has me hooked. Supergirl Comic Box Commentary - Anj

    Jun 05, 2026

It is clear that Parker and Sheridan are laying out an allegory for Earth and the US in this divided Krypton. And perhaps it is laid on thick albeit briefly. The differences in this Elseworlds are interesting and engaging. Krypton destroying itself in war, not planetary cataclysm. Kara and Kal in the same rocket. Those are good hooks. But this only works when the foundation of Supergirl is intact. This Kara seems caring and smart and fierce in defending the helpless. Add to that these pencils of Reis, conveying all the right feelings. Read Full Review

    AIPT - David Brooke

    Jun 03, 2026

Supergirl: Survive #1 succeeds most when it embraces its unique setup: Kara Zor-El stranded after Krypton's destruction and tasked with protecting an infant Kal-El without the benefit of superpowers. Unfortunately, readers must wait until the very end to reach that exciting premise. The opening spends substantial time depicting Kara's ordinary teenage life, which helps establish her as an everywoman but often lacks urgency or dramatic momentum. Rod Reis elevates the material throughout with expressive character work and memorable spectacle, particularly once Krypton's fate begins to unfold. While this debut chapter feels slower and more padded than it needs to be, the final pages provide a strong reason to return for issue #2. Read Full Review

Ultimately, Supergirl: Survive #1 is a decent comic. The idea of an alternative take on Kara and Kal’s escape from their doomed home world is always an interesting concept and while so far it doesn’t feel too revolutionary, there is also something really refreshing about seeing Kara as a whole person in a way that we don’t usually get to. We get to see what she lost and see what she is willing to do to survive. It’s a more emotionally resonant start to things and while the issue could have benefitted from slowing down a little and giving readers more context, it’s a solid start and I’m interested to see where this goes. Great start of an elseworlds story. I even prefer this to the original mythos.

I would love for DC to do this more. If you want to mess around with the characters and lore, bring it out of the main continuity. Then keep the writers in the main continuity in line.

If they hadn't reinvented Supergirl in the main continuity every time a new writer picks up the pen maybe they could have been this good all the time. No shade on the current SG writer as she is doing a pretty good job, and has done at least the base research of Otto Binder's creation.

This might reach up there with my other favorite Supergirl Elseworld Gotham City Garage. I can't wait to see where the writers go with this.
