You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Jan 21, 2026And then there were aspects of the issue that feel almost incredibly cheesy. There's an element of it that feels very much like a weirdly mutated version of Jon Stones The Monster at the End of This Book. Aspects of the interaction between reader and character and creator feel kind of forced in places. This isn't a bad thing as it does speak to the overall state of mind of the narrator and main character. He's just trying to make sense of it all in at times he's going to be incredibly quaint. And silly. And awkward and cringy. But those aspects of this issue only serve to make Wally and his story that much stronger. Read Full Review

Feb 25, 2026While this has been the motive of the whole series, Issue #8 sharpens the thesis. The focus on neglected intimacy grounds the formal risks in something painfully human. The damage feels quiet and irreversible. By the end, the series reads like a cautionary tale about the narratives we construct in pursuit of legacy. The grand gestures fade. Fanlight Zone - Richard Coryell
Jan 24, 2026Assorted Crisis Events #8 gets more serious than what we are more accustomed to in this series. Don't get me wrong, every issue has a message, but usually it's delivered with a little more of a tongue in cheek style. This issue abandons that and puts the message front and center with an overall depressing feeling with said message. With that being said, this is the most relatable of all the messages thus far. This issue is another great installment in this amazing series. Make sure to grab a copy when you visit the shop this week and then prepare to have a good deep thought about what you read after. Utterly heartbreaking. Time after time, this book manages to deal with multiple topics in such an interesting, thought-provoking, and emotionally resonant way. What a book this is. Loved that this was on newsprint, as well, as it only made the book better. Definitely one of the more experimental issues of this series, and I really enjoyed that side of it. This series just hurts so much in the best way possible.

This was the most Ice Cream Man like issue. I'm giving it an 8.5 at the time of reading. I think I might reread. I can tell I'm already starting to go over it in my mind. My grade might be too low, but this comic was so different I found it hard to rate. Not sure how I fully feel about it.
