But Why Tho? - William Tucker
Jul 03, 2024Werewolf By Night: Blood Hunt #1 is entirely unexpected. It’s one of the most shocking additions to the event so far. None of the other tie-ins or the main book are this bleak and relentless. It’s a monster on monster on monster brawl with unsuspecting humans in the middle. Read Full Review

Jul 03, 2024Werewolf By Night Blood Hunt #1 packs a vicious punch as it enters the Blood Hunt story. Jake is filled with rage but a sense of duty and caring, while the bloodthirsty vampires and demons will attack even kids to achieve their quest. Read Full Review

Jul 03, 2024All of this ultraviolence is rendered in glorious color by Alex Sinclair. The sunny skies of Arizona soon give way to the cold, bluish-black energies of the Darkforce Dimension. The only thing that stands out in this darkness is Jake's snow white fur and the buckets of blood he spills, as well as Joe Sabino's sand-colored captions. Even if this is a bit of a rocky start, it's still a start and hopefully the new ongoing keeps those elements in the forefront. Read Full Review

ComicBook.com - Chase Magnett
Jul 03, 2024Events are explained as they proceed leaving no space for tension or curiosity to develop as every page turn announces "and then this happened." Combine that with artwork that suffers a number of minor inconsistencies before delivering the issue's only effective horror panel at its very, and you're left with a one-shot that seems already prepared to be forgotten. I really like this, though I won't pretend it's flawless. The dialogue sounds realistic, but it's also as forgettable as most real speech. The art is mostly strong and clear--until those panels where it isn't. The timeline is wonky; the creators can't decide whether to explain or conceal the fact that there's a time-jump all the way from BH #1 to BH #4.
But this comic has ambitious ideas and it explores them well. The initial scenes do a great job of making backstory exposition interesting instead of boring, weaving it together with an explanation of the setting. Jake's characterization is clear, consistent, and engaging. The resolution takes him to a surprisingly dark place, and I'm tempted to follow him.

A solid little one-shot. Nothing extraordinary here, but I thought everything was good for what it was. I was fairly interested in Jake's character, though it's a little ironic considering Loo's new Werewolf by Night series that follows this is supposed to be about Jack Russell instead.
