But Why Tho? - William Tucker

    Jan 31, 2024

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu: Gang War #2 threatens Shang-Chi’s balance. Poised between being a gang leader and a superhero, the turmoil sends the martial artist back and forth between armies like a tennis ball. He can’t trust anyone and no one can trust him. The different sides of the character are on display to reflect who faces him, and that variety is exciting to explore. Read Full Review

The central rule of Shang-Chi comics, ever since Paul Gulacy arrived on Master of Kung Fu, is to make the action look incredible. The character has been defined by many artists, some legendary and some simply well-suited to the genre. But that's the missing heart of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu: Gang War with action sequences where readers could imagine any costumed superhero delivering a montage of generic blows. Read Full Review

I thought this was a set-up from the previous issue. For whatever reason, I just found this a little more interesting this time around. Majado's art is solid, but it could use some improvement. However, it's my understanding that he's fairly new to comics, so I'm not going to be super critical. I sense potential for him to get better, as his art is far from bad here. As for Pak's story, it was fairly intriguing and I am interested to see how it concludes with the next issue.

    Well, this title tumbled quickly.

The art and prose are decent. Not spectacular, but not fatally flawed.

I think the problem is that the characters are too flat. I don't buy into the notion that their actions and decisions are driving the plot; the hand of the author is too clear. Things develop the way they do because that's what Greg Pak wants to happen.
