  Astonishingly Awful

  Oct 14, 2026

An anniversary issue would be THE opportunity for fan service - reliving the character’s most iconic moments, bringing back some favorites supporting characters etc. You will find very little of it in this book. As a matter of fact, you won’t find most of the characters depicted on the cover in this book. There’s Roma and Saturnyne, Betsy and Jamie Braddock, but not even Meggan shows up, let alone her and Brian’s daughter Maggie. No Excalibur, no Technet, no Crazy Gang. Instead we get an obscure villain from CB’s early days called Dr. Synne, some old dude in a Captain Britain corps uniform, and a random demon disguised as CB. All of this is disappointing and infuriating. There is literally nothing that makes this book celebratory, except th e fact that Chris Claremont and Alan Davis got to work on two of the stories and did the absolute minimum.

But let’s get to the stories we actually got…

“Braddock Business“ is a disjointed Claremont tale that apparently happens between two panels of an old Captain Britain issue. And that’s exactly how it feels - confusing and redundant. It’s as if Chris Claremont had a stroke or didn’t know what else to write, so he pulled something completely random out of his ass. The art is sub par as well.

“Chains of Command” is the obligatory Alan Davis story. It’s a nothingburger, but at least there’s some reference to the Jasper’s warp. The art is good, but far from what Davis produced in his heyday.

“Another Day, Another World”: Dan Abnett infuses his story with some pagan mythology, making it the most interesting of the three tales. Unfortunately the art looks like a child drew it with burned matches.

All in all, there’s nothing special about these three tales, they just seem like random occurrences that happened somewhere someplace in Brian and Betsy’s lives.

My ultimate verdict: This special is not just another underwhelming anniversary issue. It’s a slap in the face of every fan of Brian and Betsy Braddock. more
