To be touched by an Outsider is to become an Outsider. A clawed, black hand reaches out to touch Shiva's cheek in her sleep. The hand does not belong to Teacher. Who is this strange new Outsider, and what do its creepy murmurings about "mother" portend? Enter a fantasy realm shrouded in mystery, in a dark fairy tale-like setting for fans of The Ancient Magus' Bride.

This second volume is giving me a lot more vibes of The Ancient Magus Bride. The wilderness of the Outside is very reminiscent of the countryside in Bride, which is also like many English-influenced fae worlds. The scariest part of the first volume was this second Outsider who isn't nice like Teacher is, but the scariest part of the second volume is Teacher going to TOWN with an ax on this second Outsider. Even that doesn't kill it, though, so it's a poignant example of how difficult Outsiders are to destroy. There are now more questions about Shiva and not only whether she is cursed or not, but what she means to this world, both Outsiders and Insiders, and it's a mystery that will keep me reading.
