Jun 17, 2026I don’t usually give books like this 5 stars (or whatever you want to say this book got five of); it’s not a character-redefining thing or a modern classic that we’ll be talking for years, it’s just a solid comic. However, when you read a book as well put together as this one, there’s really no other rating you can give it. Marvel drops the ball with these What If… comics all the time, but this one is nothing but net. I wish it was longer and we got to see what came next, which is a sign of a flawless What If… comic. Jun 17, 2026This was another fun and interesting entry into the What If series. It’s always fun to take a look at hypotheticals and what else may have happened in a story. This issue provides essentially two different stories for the price of one. Read Full Review

Jun 17, 2026What If…? Thor Is a well-paced one-shot that doesn’t try to outdo any prior storylines. The writing is sharp, and the artwork is neat and full of dynamic action scenes. Overall this is a solid read for fans of Thor or any of Marvel’s numerous What If...? titles. Read Full Review

You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff
Jun 18, 2026It's a fun, little exercise. It's fun to see how Grønbekk tackles an ideal like this. She manages a very concise story that plays well with the overall tapestry of the Marvel Universe. There are a lot of different elements that could have dragged the narrative quite a bit had the author chosen to move it in a different direction. As it was, she chose to maintain a very pure approach to it that just happens to feel like it was a lot more to Michael Moorcock than it does to a more Marvel-based style of storytelling. AIPT - David Brooke
Jun 17, 2026What If...? Thor #1 succeeds as an entertaining action comic packed with epic visuals, cosmic stakes, and a mashup that feels tailor-made for Marvel fans. Grønbekk understands the appeal of combining Thor's godly power with the Venom symbiote, while Sergio Davila turns every major battle into a feast for the eyes. The biggest frustration is how quickly the story races through a concept that unfolds over hours, rather than imagining an entire run. Instead of watching the symbiote reshape Thor's life over time, readers get a condensed version that reaches its climax almost as soon as the premise is established. The result is enjoyable and often impressive, but it leaves plenty of unrealized potential on the table. A fun what-if that could have been truly legendary. Read Full Review

Plot
Thor loses his cape in the Battleworld during Secret Wars, and he and Hulk use the same machine Spider-Man used to create the black suit. Unbeknownst to Thor, he bonds with the symbiote.
This design of Thor's symbiote suit is spectacular.
Thor feels an even greater power than before, and in his new black armor, he faces the Jotun ice giants on Midgard. Loki and Sif assist Thor, but Loki senses something is amiss with his brother, especially since Thor seems less compassionate.
A voice in Thor's head urges him to act.
During the battle, Thor discovers something hidden in a cave: Knull. He and three symbiote dragons capture Thor and torture him with fire to force him to release the symbiote. Thor u more+ Like • Comment
