Sarya spends much of this story equating her struggle to the legends of Widows she has grown up on and getting lost in fantasy, and there's something very meta about these moments. Sarya struggles with her identity and would rather be lost in fiction as her readers, many of whom may be working through their own feelings of self-determination and identity, are also losing themself in her story. Sarya is working out the trustworthiness of those around her similarly to her middle-grade audience. Sarya's battle for sense of self is admirable, and author Zack Jordan handles this with humor, positivity, and kindness. Widow mother Shenya's protectiveness will also appeal to adult readers who are working through the balance of providing freedom for their growing children and their instincts of protectiveness.
