The Digger is shaping up to be one of those indie comics you don’t want to sleep on. High-stakes jungle adventure, a morally slippery archaeologist, and a kid learning the hard way that some expeditions should never have started. And judging by how things are escalating?

I think what keeps Arcane Avengers #1 from feeling like another “look, everybody got redesigned, ain’t that cute?” alternate-universe gimmick is that the creative team remembers the people underneath all the magic and drip still gotta matter. The manga flavor is there, loud enough to give the book its own identity, but it never feels like Marvel threw a wig on the Avengers and yelled anime. The supernatural changes actually connect to what these characters are carrying emotionally, especially Bucky, who is basically walking around like somebody gave trauma a spellbook. I came in for magical Winter Soldier chaos and yokai running wild, but I stayed because this little crew has attitude, baggage, secrets and the kind of chemistry that makes you know the next mission is gonna be messy as hell. And yeah, after all that? I absolutely wanna see them make another bad decision.

Visually, the volume gives you enough variety that it never feels like endless illustrated conversation. Yes, there are plenty of quieter scenes, but when the magic ramps up, the creators actually let the scale expand with it. Energy effects get bigger. Spaces become stranger. Henry’s anatomy starts doing things anatomy really should not be doing. I would still love a little more variation in some of the repeated reaction beats, especially across a collection this large, but the consistency of the art team is impressive. The book knows when to be cute, when to be weird and when to make you remember that maybe, just maybe, being best friends with an eldritch horror is not the safest extracurricular activity.
